1. Why Visit Kedarnath? Spiritual & Historical Significance

Kedarnath is not just a destination — it is a transformative experience that has drawn seekers for over 1,200 years. According to Hindu mythology, the Pandavas built the original temple to seek Lord Shiva's forgiveness after the Kurukshetra war. The great saint and philosopher Adi Shankaracharya is credited with reviving and consecrating the temple in the 8th century CE. His samadhi (memorial) stands just behind the main shrine.

As one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, Kedarnath holds the highest place among the Panch Kedar shrines and forms the crown jewel of the Char Dham Yatra alongside Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. The self-manifested (swayambhu) lingam — in the form of a triangular hump — is believed to represent the back of Lord Shiva, who took the form of a bull (Nandi) to evade the Pandavas.

The temple's granite structure, reportedly built over a thousand years ago without mortar, has survived avalanches, floods, and the catastrophic 2013 Kedarnath disaster — a miracle that devotees attribute to divine protection. The massive boulder behind the temple that shielded it from the 2013 floods is now known as Bheem Shila.

2. Kedarnath Temple Opening & Closing Dates 2026

The temple remains shut for nearly six months every winter due to extreme snowfall. The opening date is announced on Mahashivratri by the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) after sacred rituals at Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath.

Official 2026 Char Dham Opening Dates

✦    Yamunotri: 19 April 2026

✦    Gangotri: 19 April 2026

✦    Kedarnath: 22 April 2026 at 08:00 AM

✦    Badrinath: 23 April 2026

Closing Date (2026): The temple typically closes on Bhai Dooj (the second day after Diwali). The expected closing window is late October to early November 2026. After closure, the sacred idol of Lord Kedarnath is ceremonially transported back to Ukhimath for winter worship.

The Doli (palanquin) Procession: Before the 2026 opening, the Panchmukhi Doli of Baba Kedarnath travels from Ukhimath → Guptkashi → Phata → Gaurikund → Kedarnath over three days, accompanied by thousands of devotees chanting "Har Har Mahadev." Witnessing this procession is itself considered an extraordinary blessing.
