INDIA
GATE
The
42 metre high, free standing arch, popularly known as India Gate, was
designed by Luytens and built in 19111. It was originally called All India
War Memorial in memory of the 90,000 Soldiers of the Indian Army who died
in World War I. The names of the soldiers are inscribed all along the
walls of the arch. In 1971, an eternal flame was lit here to honour the
Amar Jawan (immortal soldiers).
RED
FORT
Also
called the Lal Qila, the fort is laid out along the river Yamuna as an
irregular octagon. It is surrounded by a wall of about 2.4 km in
circumference & is built of red sandstone. The Mughal ruler Shah Jahan
transferred his capital from Agra to Delhi and, after nine years, the fort
was completed in 1648. The fort has two main entrances, the Delhi Gate and
the Lahori Gate. The latter faces Chandni Chowk, the city's most crowded
but diverse market.
QUTUB
MINAR
This
magnificent structure in the southern part of the capital was built by the
Muslim King, Kutab-ud-din Aibak in 1199 AD. A part of it which could not
be finished by completed by another Muslim King, Iltutmish. In 1368, Feroz
Shah Tughlaq rebuilt the top storeys and added a cupola. An earthquake
brought the cupola down in 1803 and an Englishman replaced it with another
in 1829 but was removed some years later. Minar(tower)is 72.5 metres high
and tapers from 15 meter-diameter base to just 2.5 meter at the top. The
tower has given distinct stories, each marked by a projecting balcony. The
first three stories are made of red sandstone, the fourth and fifth of
marble and sandstone.
At the foot of the Qutab Minar stands the first mosque to be built in
India, the Might of Islam Mosque. Qutab-ud-din began construction of the
mosque in 1193, but it has number of additions and extensions during the
year.
BAHAI
TEMPLE
Lying
to the east of Siri is this building shaped like a lotus flower. Built
between 1980 and 1986, it is set amongst pools and gardens, and adherents
of any faith are free to visit the temple and pray or meditate, according
to own religion and faith.
HAWA
MAHAL
Jaipur's
signature building the Hawa Mahal, a multi layered palace, was built by
Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. Famous for it's Beehive like structure, the
Mahal is an interplay of red and pink sand stone, carefully and
painstakingly outlined with white borders and motifs. The palaces and
forts of yesteryears which were witness to the royal processions and
splendors are now living monuments, accepted quite naturally into the
life-style of the people of the "Pink City". Falling under the
Golden Triangle, and being visited by millions of domestic and foreign
tourists, the city of Jaipur is a place of high tourist interest. The Pink
City, as commonly known, has all sorts of amenities for domestic and
foreign tourists. Hotels ranging from 5 star to low budgets are available.
The city is linked by Rail, Road, and Air and attracts high traffic in
winters.
GWALIOR
FORT
For
over 100 years this fort has been over looking the city of Gwalior. One of
the most invincible forts in India, this imposing citadel has changed many
hands. It is build on a hill of sandstone and towers 100 m from the plain.
The outer wall of the fort is almost 2 miles in length and the width
varies from one kms to 200 meters. The walls of the fort gives way onto
the steep slopes. This fort has been a witness to many battles in the
turbulent times as well as as festivals in the peace time. The rulers have
imparted justice from the fort which has seen the imprisonment of many.
The ceremonies held in the fort have been spelled out grandeur but the
Jauhars have screamed distress. It was here that Tatyia tope and Rani of
Jhansi fought for their freedom. Rani of Jhansi laid down her life in an
assault by the British to capture the fort.
JAISALMER
FORT
Deep
in the heart of the Thar Desert is Jaisalmer, one of the last princely
bastions in the region. Founded on what was the cross - road of lucrative
trade routes, this remote settlement came to be celebrated for the valour
of its rulers, and for the aesthetic sense represented by their palaces
and havelis. The rich merchants engaged stone - craftsmen who worked
delicately on the sandstone mansions they built, filling up facades with
sculptural filigree, screen windows, delicate pavilions and beautiful
balconies. Today, these veritable art - museums are still inhabited, and
their colorful celebrations and festivals have placed Jaisalmer Fort
firmly on the world tourism map.
GATEWAY
OF INDIA
Built
to commemorate the visit of the first ever British Monarch, King George V
and Queen Mary in 1911, was a white plaster arch, which was later changed
to the carved yellow basalt Gateway. The Gateway was built by the
architect George Wittet. The statues of patriot Shivaji and Swami
Vivekananda on the square, before the Gateway, enhances the scene.
