KATHMANDU
Kathmandu
is the window to a magical land of towering mountains, exotic culture and
centuries - old art and architecture, of temples and monastries. No where
in the world can one find the pagentry of scenery, peoples, cultural
heritage and art in the tiny Himalayan - kingdom of Nepal. From the
topical jungles of Chitwan to the icy apex of Mount Everest, Nepal is a
staircase of ecological zones. Among the major places to visit are
Swayambunath - the oldest stupa in Nepal, Boudhnath - ancient Tibetan
Stupa, and Pashupatinath - a sacred Hindu temple and sacred spot for
cremations.
UDAIPUR
Gleaming
in its abundance of lakes and palaces, the enchanting lake city of Udaipur
nestles in a valley among lush hills of the Aravalis, on the banks of the
shimmering Lake Pichola. The main part of the palace converted into
Museum, Lake Palace now converted into a luxury hotel. Pratap Samarak -
Hilltop garden with the statue of Maharana Pratap, Saheho ki Ban, brings
to the fore the unique life style of the royal ladies who once strolled in

MOUNT
ABU
Rajasthan's
only hill station and a major pilgrim centre. Till about 11th century
Mount Abu was an important Vaishnav and Shiv Pilgrim centre but is today
recognised more as a Jain Pilgrim centre. The Dilwara temples are the best
Jain temples in the country. Nakki Lake surrounded by hills and overlooks
the enormous toad rock. This artificial lake is believed to be dug out by
the Gods themselves with their nails hence its name Nakki.
MAHABALIPURAM
Mahabalipuram the ancient capital
and sea port of Pallava kings is famous for its south Indian temple
architecture.But today it is a sleepy village living on its past glory and
the tourist traffic. The sculptures and carvings are fascinating.
Mahabalipuram is also known as the "city of seven pagodas" for
out of solid stone were carved exquisite rock temples. Five of the temples
are known as "Rathas" and on their walls the story of Hindu
mythology has been lovingly carved out. The most famous of them is group
of five rathas. This ratha is dedicated to the five Pandava princes and
their consort-wife Draupadi. A group of elephants one of them 5 meters
long known as "Arjuna Penance" is the most prominent feature of
this sculpt.
OOTY
Wotkymund,
Whatakaymunk, Wootacamund, Wuttasamund, Ootacamund or now a days the
official Udagamandalam are some of the names which over last two centuries
have been given to the queen of the southern hill stations.lt derives its
name from "Nilgiri" or the "BlueMountains" name given
to Hills by the inhabitants more than 850 years ago because of the blue
haze of the clouds which envelope the hill slopes. Among the places to
visit are botanical gardens, Lake Doddabeta Mukurti Peak, The Pykara Dam
and sprawling tea plantations.
AGRA
The
Taj Mahal, Eternal symbol of India and Agra, is breathtaking by moonlight.
The city that grew in prominence under the Moghuls retains the ambience of
an era long past. Places of interest are Taj Mahal, Mausoleum built by
Emperor Shahjehan for his Empress Mumtaz Mahal. 20,000 Workmen worked for
22 years to complete it. Agra Fort is a blend of an Architectural style
used during the reign of three Emperors, the tomb of Itmad - Ud - Daulah
and Sikandra the tomb of Akbar. Fatehpur Sikri designed by Akbar as his
capital city was lived - in for only a very few years as it was abandoned
due to shortage of water that is why the name "The Abandoned City".
It is a beautiful architectural city built of Red Sandstone.
AURANGABAD
Named
after Emperor Aurangzeb, the last of the great Moghul Emperor's Aurangabad
offers an exciting mix of Buddhist and Muslim places of interest. It is
also a convenient point for visiting the Ajanta and Ellora caves. Places
of interest are the 12 Aurangzeb caves belonging to the Buddhist Era built
between the 3rd and 11th Centuries, Bibi ka Maqbara , a mausoleum
resembling the Taj Mahal Built in 1660. The history Museum of Marathwada
University includes excavations dating to the Satavadhana dynasty. Ajanta
- Ajanta caves renowned chiefly for their magnificient wall paintings and
frescoes - depicting scenes from the life of Buddha. The caves consist
mainly of Buddhist caves Temples and Monastries cut into the Rock, dating
from 200 BC to 650 AD. Ellora - Ellora caves - A great and unique
achievement in cave architecture and sculpture which demonstrates this
peaceful co existence of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.
