Near
the village of Sadri lies the Ranakpur Temple
complex, one of the biggest and most important
cluster of Jain temples in India. Nestled in the
Aravalli Range, Ranakpur is a mere 90 kms from
Udaipur. The Chaumukha Temple, or Four-Faced Temple,
is the main one in the complex and dates to the 15th
century. Built in marble, the temple has 29 halls
supported by over 1400 pillars.
Ranapur is named after Rana Khumbha, whom Dharna Sah
(the founder of the temples) approached when he had
the vision of his great temple, to ask for the land
for its construction. Rana Khumbha apparently agreed
on the condition that the temple be named after him.
Maharani Bagh is a delightful orchard retreated
situated between Jodhpur, Udaipur and Mount Abu. It
is close to the famous Ranakpur Temple and the
imposing Kumbalagarh Fort. The orchards, surrounded
by the Aravalli Hills, were laid out in the late
19th century by the Maharani Jodhpur and have always
been a favourite holiday resort for the royal
family. With a small swimming pool and 18 cottages,
Maharani Bagh offers a comfortable stay
